Data Introduction Tour

This course is mandatory for new employees and for those who want to have access to the MIB Linux infrastructure. Furthermore, it is open for all MIB members who want to learn more about data management and the FAIR principals.

In this course we learn,

Theory:

  • What data management is, the FAIR principals and how it helps to shape your research
  • Managing security and storage of all kinds of Research Data
  • Storage options for larger amounts of data at WUR
  • Handle the privacy aspects of some datasets
  • How to get help with your computational and data management needs

Practical session:

How to Write a data management plan Prepare correct meta-data for your experiments

To bring with you:

  • Keep your project proposal at hand. (if you don’t have it, ask your supervisor)
  • Think about your data management needs, upfront for this meeting.
  • Laptop for hands on exercises
  • You have to get yourself acquainted with the MIB data management protocol.

Linux tutorial 1 & 2

This courses are opened to all MIB members who want to learn the command line in Linux and mandatory before becoming an official user of our infrastructure.

Linux tutorial part 1 focuses on (no prior experience is needed), * Accessing a server remotely * Navigating in the Linux folder structure * Folders/files accessibility and permissions * Understanding Linux commands Linux tutorial part 2 focuses on, * the different types of files * how to make files * redirections and pipes * wildcards/globing * File compression * File transfer between client and remote machine

All future users must have completed the data Tour and validate the Basic Linux quiz on brightspace https://brightspace.wur.nl/d2l/home/257369, ask us to add you to the course.


A minimum of 4 attendees is needed to proceed. Send an email to bioinfo.mib@wur.nl indicating which tutorial(s) you are interested in. It is possible to arrange custom dates for groups of 4+ people.
